The Science of Stress, Rest, and Returning to Balance
As summer begins to wind down, many of us find ourselves preparing for a new season. Routines shift, schedules may become fuller, and the pace of life begins to accelerate. Whether you're returning from vacation, preparing children for school, or simply moving into a busier time of year, this transition offers an opportunity to pause before life speeds up again.
Rather than waiting until we feel overwhelmed, August is an ideal time to ask a different question:
How can I build resilience before stress begins to accumulate?
As a physician, I often see patients searching for answers to fatigue, poor sleep, brain fog, digestive concerns, anxiety, or difficulty concentrating. Sometimes laboratory testing reveals an underlying medical condition. But just as often, I find that the body is asking for something much simpler—and much harder — for many of us to give ourselves.
Rest.
One of the greatest misconceptions about stress is that we think it only comes from difficult experiences. Certainly, illness, grief, and loss place tremendous demands on the body. But so do positive life events. Travel, celebrations, career opportunities, caring for family, moving, learning something new, and even exciting milestones all require our nervous system to adapt.
Stress itself is not the problem.
In fact, stress is necessary for growth. Exercise strengthens muscles because it challenges the body. Learning expands the brain because it requires adaptation. Healthy amounts of stress help us become stronger and more resilient. The challenge arises when we never give the body an opportunity to recover.
In fact, the American Psychological Association (APA) defines stress as the normal psychological and physical response to the demands of life. Stress is simply the body's way of adapting to challenges and helping us respond to changing circumstances.
In the right amount, stress can be beneficial. Psychologists refer to this as eustress—the positive, manageable stress that helps us grow, adapt, and build resilience. Learning a new skill, preparing for a meaningful presentation, training for a race, or navigating a life transition can all create eustress. These experiences challenge us, but they also strengthen our confidence and capacity. Distress, on the other hand, occurs when demands consistently exceed our ability to recover. It is not the challenge itself that creates problems, but the absence of adequate restoration or multiple challenges that overwhelm our ability to cope.
Rather than viewing every challenge as something negative, we can begin to see many of life's demands as opportunities to build resilience. Just as muscles become stronger after being challenged and then allowed to recover, our minds and bodies become more adaptable, and resilient, when periods of effort are balanced with periods of rest. And resiliency allows us to manage more effectively when multiple challenges occur at once.
Stress as a Natural Physiological Response
When we think about stress, we often imagine deadlines, financial worries, or difficult relationships. But from a physiological perspective, our bodies experience "stress" anytime they need to produce energy to meet a demand—even demands we perceive as enjoyable or routine.
Every time we exercise, give a presentation, solve a complex problem, care for a child, or simply move through a busy day, our stress response is activated. The sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system—often called the "fight-or-flight" system—helps mobilize energy so we can meet the moment.
During this process, the adrenal glands release epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine, which increase heart rate, blood pressure, and alertness while directing blood flow to the muscles and brain. At the same time, cortisol helps maintain energy by increasing blood glucose, supporting metabolism, and ensuring the brain and muscles have the fuel they need. In the short term, these hormones are not harmful—they are essential for life. Without them, we couldn't get out of bed in the morning, exercise, think clearly, or respond to challenges.
Our bodies were designed to activate this stress response—and just as importantly—to turn it off when the challenge has passed. It is not meant to remain switched on indefinitely. The body also has built-in mechanisms that help buffer the effects of stress while we're engaged in meaningful or enjoyable activities. Hormones such as dopamine, released when we experience pleasure, accomplishment, or motivation, and oxytocin, released through positive social connection, affection, and kindness, can enhance feelings of well-being and lessen some of the negative physiological effects of stress. This is one reason why spending time with loved ones, engaging in hobbies, or finding purpose in our work can help us feel energized rather than depleted. However, these positive experiences don't replace the body's fundamental need for recovery. They may soften the impact of stress, but true restoration still requires periods of rest, allowing our physiology to shift from energy expenditure to repair, healing, and renewal.
Your Body Was Designed for Both Activity and Restoration
Our nervous system is beautifully intelligent. When we encounter a challenge, it activates a coordinated stress response designed to protect us. This response is essential for survival. But over time, chronic activation begins to affect nearly every system in the body. Sleep becomes lighter or more fragmented. Digestion changes. The immune system becomes less efficient. Hormonal balance shifts. We may notice increased anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or a sense that we simply don't feel like ourselves.
Modern neuroscience has also shown that prolonged stress can influence areas of the brain involved in memory, emotional regulation, and decision-making. What many people interpret as a lack of motivation or poor focus is often a nervous system asking for restoration.
This is why resilience is so important.
Resilience is not the absence of stress. It is the ability to recover from it.
Ayurveda's Wisdom: Activity Must Be Balanced by Rest
One of Ayurveda's timeless teachings is that health depends on rhythm and balance. Activity and rest are complementary. One fuels growth; the other allows repair.
The challenge today is that many people remain in a state of continuous activation. We move from one responsibility to the next, often with little time to pause or recover. Over time, this can shift the body from healthy, adaptive stress into chronic stress biology.
When stress hormones remain elevated for prolonged periods, they begin to affect nearly every system in the body. Persistently elevated cortisol can disrupt normal sleep patterns, contribute to elevated blood sugar, increase cravings for high-calorie foods, and promote low-grade inflammation—a common underlying factor in many chronic diseases. Ongoing activation of adrenaline and norepinephrine may contribute to elevated blood pressure, muscle tension, feelings of anxiety, irritability, and difficulty relaxing. Chronic stress also changes the brain itself. Research has shown that prolonged exposure to stress hormones can increase the activity and even the size of the amygdala, the brain's fear and threat detection center, making us more reactive and emotionally sensitive. At the same time, the hippocampus, which is essential for learning and memory, can shrink in volume, contributing to forgetfulness and difficulty forming new memories. Stress also reduces connectivity in the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for planning, focus, decision-making, and emotional regulation. As a result, clear thinking becomes more difficult, brain fog sets in, and even simple decisions can begin to feel overwhelming.
Eventually, the body begins sending stronger signals that it needs recovery. Fatigue, lack of motivation, poor concentration, and emotional exhaustion are not signs of weakness—they are often the body's intelligent way of insisting that we slow down. When we repeatedly override these signals, burnout and illness become more likely.
The good news is that our nervous system contains its own built-in antidote to stress. The body heals most effectively when we create the conditions that allow healing to occur.
The Body Also Has a Relaxation Response
Just as the sympathetic nervous system prepares us for action, the parasympathetic nervous system—often called the "rest-and-digest" system—helps restore balance after periods of activity. This shift into a calmer physiological state is known as the relaxation response, a term first described by physician Dr. Herbert Benson.
When the relaxation response is activated, heart rate slows, blood pressure begins to decrease, breathing becomes slower and deeper, muscle tension eases, and digestion improves. Stress hormone production decreases while heart rate variability—a marker of nervous system flexibility and resilience—often improves. Blood flow shifts away from survival mode and toward healing, tissue repair, immune function, and digestion. At the level of the brain, regular relaxation practices have been shown to increase neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to form new neural connections and adapt to change. They strengthen communication within the prefrontal cortex, improving attention, emotional regulation, and decision-making, while reducing overactivity in the amygdala. Studies have also shown that meditation and other restorative practices can help preserve, and in some cases even increase, the volume of the hippocampus, supporting learning and memory. In essence, while chronic stress reshapes the brain for survival, the relaxation response helps reshape it for resilience.
In many ways, the relaxation response is the physiological opposite of the stress response. It doesn't eliminate stress; rather, it helps complete the stress cycle, allowing the body to recover and prepare for the next challenge.
Ayurveda has understood this principle for thousands of years.
Health is not built through constant effort alone. It is created through the balance of activity and rest, nourishment and elimination, movement and stillness. The body heals most effectively when we create the conditions that allow healing to occur.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, moments of restoration replenish ojas—our vital reserve of strength, immunity, stability, and resilience. Just as activity consumes energy, intentional rest rebuilds it.
Rest Is Not a Luxury—It's Part of Health
Many people believe they need to "earn" rest after everything is finished. But the body doesn't work that way. Recovery is not a reward; it is a biological necessity.
The healthiest nervous systems are not those that avoid stress altogether—they are the ones that can move fluidly between activation and restoration. We become resilient not by eliminating challenges, but by allowing ourselves adequate recovery afterward.
Fortunately, the relaxation response can be intentionally cultivated through simple daily practices, including:
Meditation
Slow, rhythmic diaphragmatic breathing
Yoga Nidra
Body awareness practices such as body scans
Gentle yoga or stretching, tai chi, qi gong
Spending time in nature
Mindful walking
Prayer or gratitude practices
Massage or self-abhyanga (Ayurvedic oil massage)
Listening to calming music
Restorative sleep
Five Simple Ways to Build Resilience Every Day
You do not need to overhaul your life to support your nervous system. Often, the smallest daily practices have the greatest long-term impact.
Begin your morning with intention.
Before reaching for your phone, spend a few quiet moments breathing, stretching, or simply sitting in stillness. How we begin the day often shapes how we experience it.
Move your body every day.
Walking, yoga, strength training, or any enjoyable movement helps regulate stress hormones while improving circulation and mental clarity.
Create moments of true rest.
Rest is not scrolling through your phone or multitasking. It is giving your mind permission to pause.
Protect your sleep.
Quality sleep is one of the body's greatest tools for recovery. A calming evening routine allows the brain and nervous system to repair, process, and restore.
Cultivate practices that nourish your mind.
Meditation, gratitude, prayer, journaling, spending time in nature, or meaningful connection with others all strengthen our capacity to respond to life's inevitable challenges with greater ease.
Resilience Is a Practice
As we move into a new season, I encourage you to ask yourself:
What daily practices help me feel grounded, restored, and connected to myself?
Even a few minutes of intentional rest throughout the day can begin shifting the nervous system toward balance.
Stress will always be part of life. Growth, learning, and meaningful work all require effort. But health depends not only on how well we activate—it also depends on how well we recover. When we honor both activity and rest, we support the body's remarkable ability to restore balance, cultivate resilience, and thrive.
